What does this fault code mean?
The control module checks the engine temperature signal. The fault code is set when the signal corresponds to a temperature lower than a certain value, which can be caused by a circuit shorted to battery voltage or an open circuit.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Damaged temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the diagnostic and fault status for the code with the ignition on. Clear the code and road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not short-circuited to positive and has no open circuit
- 4Take care working in the engine bay, as the electric cooling fan can run even when the ignition is off
- 5If the connector and wiring are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the coolant temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine does not start
What the fault can affect3
- The engine temperature is calculated using a model
- The catalyst warm-up is switched off at start-up
- The electric cooling fan runs at a predefined speed
