What does this fault code mean?

The fault code is set when the signal from the coolant temperature sensor is faulty. Although the code is described as an intermittent or erratic function, it indicates a permanent fault that remains until the fault is repaired.

    Possible causes

    • Loose connections in the wiring
    • Open circuit in the wire
    • Damaged coolant temperature sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the diagnostic and fault status for the code with the ignition on. Clear the code and road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check the connector at the coolant temperature sensor: it should be firmly seated and free from looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant temperature in live data. An unreasonable value means the fault is still present
    4. 4With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the wire to the sensor has no open circuit
    5. 5If the connector and wiring are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the coolant temperature sensor

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally

    What the fault can affect1

    • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is not controlled
