What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) checks the signal from the throttle position sensor, potentiometer 1. The fault code is set when the signal is faulty or the expected voltage is outside the permitted range.

    Possible causes

    • Poor contact or oxidation between the engine control module and the throttle unit connectors
    • Damaged throttle unit
    • Damaged potentiometer 1 in the throttle unit
    • Open circuit on the signal cables
    • Voltage feed short-circuited to ground

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Then clear the code and road test the vehicle
    2. 2Check the connection between the control module and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the throttle position in live data with the engine idling and while pressing the accelerator. The value should follow the pedal smoothly
    4. 4If no fault is found in these checks and the code returns as a permanent fault, have a workshop try replacing the throttle unit

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The engine has poor performance
    • A text message is shown together with a warning symbol

    What the fault can affect3

    • The throttle angle is calculated from potentiometer 2 instead
    • If potentiometer 2 also fails, the power supply to the throttle motor is cut off and the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position
    • Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
