What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the signals from the two throttle position sensors. The fault code is set when the signal from either sensor is unreasonably low.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
- Open circuit on the signal cables
- Voltage feed short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit on the voltage feed
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read the diagnostic and fault status for the code with the ignition on. Clear the code and road test the vehicle to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact
- 3Look at the connectors at the throttle unit. They should be firmly seated and free from contact resistance and oxidation
- 4With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check that the power supply is not short-circuited to ground and has no open circuit
- 5If the connectors are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the throttle unit
Symptoms you may notice4
- Cruise control does not function at all
- The engine has poor performance
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly at steady speed
- The engine has poor performance and lacks power when starting
What the fault can affect2
- If one of the signals is faulty, the other signal is used
- Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
