What does this fault code mean?
During warm-up the control module compares how fast the temperature rises with the expected rise. If the temperature deviates too much from the calculated value, the fault code is set, and the thermostat or the sensor may be the cause.
Possible causes
- Damaged thermostat
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the wiring and connections to the engine temperature sensor
- Damaged engine temperature sensor
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Then clear the code and road test the vehicle
- 2Check the wiring and plugs between the control module and the engine temperature sensor for poor contact or corrosion
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the coolant temperature in live data during warm-up. An unreasonable value indicates a permanent fault
- 4If the connectors are in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check and replace the thermostat if needed
Symptoms you may notice4
- The emissions warning lamp is lit
- The engine does not get properly warm
- The front heater warms up slowly or not enough
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
