What does this fault code mean?
This code means the front oxygen sensor (bank 1, sensor 1) or its signal wires are short-circuited to ground. It is set while the engine runs and can be caused by a short-circuited ground lead, a short-circuited signal cable or a damaged oxygen sensor.
Possible causes
- Short-circuit to ground in the ground lead
- Short-circuit to ground in the signal cable
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the terminals
- Open circuit in the signal cable
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Then clear the code and road test the vehicle
- 2With the connector unplugged at the oxygen sensor, use a multimeter to check that the signal and ground wires are not short-circuited to ground (the body)
- 3Check the connectors at the oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation, and that they are firmly seated
- 4If the wiring is in order and the fault remains, have a workshop check or replace the oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice4
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine has poor performance and lacks power, especially when starting
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly during acceleration
- The engine hesitates or runs unevenly at steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- The control module uses a calculated value for the oxygen sensor
