What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the front heated oxygen sensor in bank 1, the sensor in the cylinder row nearest the front of the engine. The ECM switches the mixture back and forth and checks how closely the sensor signal keeps up. The code is set if the sensor responds too slowly or not at all.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the sensor connections
- Damaged front oxygen sensor
- Short circuit between the sensor's current-carrying wires
- Open circuit in the sensor signal wire
- Air leak in the intake manifold or the exhaust manifold
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the connector to the front oxygen sensor is fully engaged and free from oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease in the connector
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the oxygen sensor have no open circuit and are not shorted to each other
- 4Check the hoses and gaskets at the intake and exhaust manifolds for air leaks
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: watch the oxygen sensor value in live data with the engine warm and check that it switches between rich and lean
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice4
- Reduced performance
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away
- The engine hesitates or jerks during acceleration, deceleration and steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
