What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a low signal from the front oxygen sensor in bank 1, it is set when the sensor responds too quickly as the mixture changes. The ECM checks the sensor's wear and tests it while driving. The code is only stored once the ECM has started the test and the conditions for it have been met.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the sensor's current-carrying wires
- Open circuit in the sensor signal wire
- Open circuit in the wire that supplies the sensor's calibration current
- Damaged front oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the connector to the front oxygen sensor is fully engaged and free from oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease in the connector
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the oxygen sensor have no open circuit and are not shorted to each other
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the oxygen sensor signal follows the switches between rich and lean mixture smoothly, without dropouts
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, try a new front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
