What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a high signal from the front oxygen sensor in bank 1, it is set when the sensor responds too slowly as the mixture changes. The ECM checks the sensor's wear by measuring how quickly it responds. The test only runs while driving, and the code is only stored once the ECM has started the test and the conditions for it have been met.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the sensor's current-carrying wires
- Open circuit in the sensor signal wire
- Open circuit in the wire that supplies the sensor's calibration current
- Damaged front oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Clean soot and dirt from the connector and make sure it is fully engaged; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Use a multimeter to check the wires to the oxygen sensor for open circuits and for shorts to each other
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the oxygen sensor value in live data with the engine warm; it should change as the mixture switches between rich and lean
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
