What does this fault code mean?
The front oxygen sensor in bank 1 gives a signal that stays fixed at a low level instead of switching between rich and lean mixture. The engine control module (ECM) compares the sensor signal with how the mixture is being controlled and sets the code if the sensor stays inactive or responds sluggishly.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the sensor connections
- Short circuit between the sensor wires
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged or dirty front oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the oxygen sensor connector is fully engaged and free from oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to ground (the body) or in contact with other wires
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the oxygen sensor signal moves when the engine is warm and the mixture switches
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice4
- Reduced performance
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away
- The engine hesitates or surges during acceleration, deceleration and steady speed
