What does this fault code mean?
The front oxygen sensor in bank 1 changes its signal too slowly when the mixture switches between rich and lean. The engine control module (ECM) measures how quickly the signal changes and sets the code when the change is too slow for the sensor to be considered working.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the sensor connections
- Short circuit between the sensor wires
- Damaged front oxygen sensor
- The oxygen sensor is damaged or dirty
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the oxygen sensor connector is fully engaged and free from oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the sensor wires are not shorted to each other
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the oxygen sensor signal changes quickly as the mixture switches between rich and lean
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice4
- Reduced performance
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away
- The engine hesitates or surges during acceleration, deceleration and steady speed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
