What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the heater in the front oxygen sensor in bank 1. The heater brings the sensor up to temperature quickly enough to give a usable signal. The ECM sets the code when the resistance of the heater circuit is too high, which gives a low temperature, or when the voltage in the circuit differs from what is expected with the heater off or on.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the heater wire to the sensor, or the wire shorted to ground
- Damaged front oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the connector is engaged and clean; measure from the wire side where possible, and do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the heater wire has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground (the body)
- 4If the connectors and wiring are intact, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
