What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the heater in the front oxygen sensor in bank 1. The code is set when the signal to the sensor heater is incorrect, and in this case it is because the wire is shorted to ground (the body). The ECM uses the sensor signal to control the fuel/air mixture, so a fault in the heater can affect how quickly the sensor warms up.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- The heater signal wire is shorted to ground
- Damaged oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the fuse for the oxygen sensor heater is intact
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the sensor heater is not shorted to ground (the body)
- 4Check the connectors at the oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 5If the wire is intact, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
