What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the heater in the front oxygen sensor in bank 1. The code is set when the signal to the sensor heater is incorrect, in this case because the circuit is broken. The ECM receives information from the sensor about the fuel/air mixture, so a broken heater circuit can affect how quickly the sensor warms up.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the ground wire
- Damaged oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the fuse for the oxygen sensor heater is intact
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the ground wire to the oxygen sensor has no open circuit
- 4Check the connectors at the oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 5If the wiring is intact, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
