What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the heater in the front oxygen sensor in bank 1. The code indicates that the heater or its control circuit has become too hot, and the ECM sets it when the signal to the heater is incorrect. The ECM uses the sensor signal to control the fuel/air mixture.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit or short circuit in the wiring
- Damaged oxygen sensor
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the fuse for the oxygen sensor heater is intact
- 3Check the connectors at the oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the sensor heater have no open circuit and are not shorted
- 5If the connectors and wiring are intact, replace the front oxygen sensor; if you suspect the engine control module is damaged, have a workshop check it
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
