What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1, which sits after the catalytic converter. It checks the sensor signal while driving and sets the code when the signal is outside its permitted range, or when the sensor's pre-heating voltage disturbs the signal. The test requires the heater to be active and the car to have had a fuel cut, for example during deceleration.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector to the rear oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the rear sensor has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground or to voltage
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the rear oxygen sensor signal in live data with the engine warm and check whether it responds to changes in throttle position
- 5If the connector and wire are intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- Control using the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
