What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1 by checking its signal. The code is set if the signal deviates from its permitted range, or if the sensor's pre-heating voltage disturbs the signal. The fault is only interpreted once the limit values have not been reached after a certain time, and both the accumulated and the current preheating have reached their values.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Ground wire shorted to ground
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor; on cars with three sensors the middle sensor may be the one concerned instead
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the sensor is not shorted to ground and has no open circuit
- 3Check the connectors at the sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 4If the connectors and wires are intact, replace the sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect2
- Control with the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
