What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a low voltage, it concerns the signal from the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1, sensor 2. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the sensor signal and sets the code when it deviates from its permitted range, or when the sensor's pre-heating voltage disturbs the signal. The rear sensor is used to check that the catalytic converter is working.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Ground wire shorted to ground
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the rear sensor is not shorted to ground
- 3Check the connector to the rear sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 4If the wires and connector are intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect2
- Control with the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
