What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1 by checking its signal. The code is set if the signal from the sensor is higher than a certain value for a certain time. On cars with three oxygen sensors the fault may instead concern the middle sensor. The check is made with the engine running, and the code is only set once the conditions are met.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Ground wire shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
- Damaged middle oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal and ground wires to the rear sensor have no contact with supply voltage
- 3Check the connector to the sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 4If the wires are intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect2
- Control with the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
