What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1, sensor 2, by checking its signal while driving. It sets the code when the signal deviates from its permitted operating range or when the pre-heating voltage disturbs the signal. The cause may therefore be wires that have picked up voltage instead of running to their correct point, or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Ground wire shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Switch the ignition off and use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the rear sensor has no contact with voltage
- 3Check that the ground wire has no contact with voltage, and inspect the connectors for contact resistance
- 4If the wires are intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect2
- Control with the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
