What does this fault code mean?
This is an event-controlled information code, and it does not always mean a real fault. The engine control module (ECM) follows how well the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1 keeps up when the mixture switches from rich to lean. The sensor may react too slowly at the switch, and this is only checked in certain driving cases with fuel cut-off.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged or dirty rear oxygen sensor
- Damaged middle oxygen sensor, on cars with three oxygen sensors
What you can do
- 1If the car runs normally, nothing needs to be done; read the code and clear it
- 2Check the connector to the rear oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Road test the car, preferably with some decelerations where the accelerator is fully released, and read the code again
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the rear sensor signal changes when the accelerator is released
- 5If the code returns and the car behaves differently, have a workshop check the oxygen sensor control
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module uses a calculated value for the mixture
