What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1 and compares how well the sensor signal follows the switches between rich and lean mixture. The code is set when the sensor reacts too slowly at the switch from rich to lean. This is only checked in certain driving cases with fuel cut-off, so the fault may lie in the sensor or in its connections.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged or dirty rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector to the rear oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the rear sensor signal changes when the accelerator is released during a deceleration
- 4If the connector is clean and intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
