What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the impedance in the signal circuit of the rear oxygen sensor in bank 1, sensor 2. The sensor should activate, and the code is set when it does not activate at all or activates too slowly. The ECM then gets no usable signal from the sensor and uses a calculated value instead. On cars with three oxygen sensors the fault may instead concern the middle sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the supply to the sensor
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector to the sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Switch the ignition off and use a multimeter to check whether the signal wire has an open circuit or is shorted to ground or to voltage
- 4If the wires and connector are intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module uses a calculated value for the mixture
