What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the rear oxygen sensor by checking its signal while driving. The code is set when the signal deviates from its permitted range, or when the sensor's pre-heating voltage disturbs the signal from the sensor. The fault may therefore lie in the sensor's heater.
Possible causes
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector to the rear sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the sensor have no open circuit and are not shorted to each other
- 4If the connector and wires are intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- Control with the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
