What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a low voltage, it concerns the signal from the oxygen sensor in bank 1, sensor 3. The code can only be set on cars with more than two oxygen sensors. The engine control module (ECM) sets it when the sensor voltage has not reached a certain value even though the heater is active. The code is a secondary fault: the root fault must be fixed first, and the code can then be cleared.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the transmission control module (TCM) and the engine control module (ECM), and start with the code for the root fault
- 2Repair the root fault first, then clear this code
- 3Check the connections at the oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- Control with the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
