What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a high voltage, it concerns the voltage from the oxygen sensor in bank 1, sensor 3, which must at some point drop below a certain value. The check is made when the sensor heater is active and the car has had a longer fuel cut-off while driving. The code can only be set on cars with three oxygen sensors, and only once the test has started and the conditions are met.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor, sensor 3
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector to the sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with battery voltage
- 4If the connector and wire are intact, replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- Control with the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
