What does this fault code mean?
The front oxygen sensor in bank 1, sensor 1, measures the oxygen content before the catalytic converter and gives the engine control module (ECM) information about the fuel/air mixture. The code is set when the sensor signal is incorrect. The test is only run during fuel cut-off, when the sensor should give a signal that reflects only the oxygen content of the exhaust gases.
Possible causes
- Damaged oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector at the front sensor for contact resistance and oxidation; do not use rust solvent spray or grease
- 3Switch the ignition off and use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no open circuit
- 4If the wire and connector are intact, replace the front oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light (MIL) on
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module uses a calculated value for the mixture
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
