What does this fault code mean?
The ECM gets mixture information from the oxygen sensor across different load ranges and corrects deviations with self-learning adaptations. The code is set when the mixture becomes too lean, so that the adaptations for bank 1 reach an end position. The fault may lie in the airflow, the fuel supply or leaks in the system.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake system
- Leak in the exhaust system
- Low fuel pressure
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
- Damaged or incorrect fuel injectors
- Dirty fuel filter
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the intake and exhaust systems for air leaks
- 3If the fuel adaptations are clearly shifted towards lean at idle, this points to an air leak; look for it before anything is replaced
- 4Have a workshop check the fuel pressure and the mass air flow sensor with diagnostic equipment
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: see whether the fuel adaptations for bank 1 are clearly shifted to one side across the different speed and load areas
Symptoms you may notice5
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- The engine misfires
- High idle speed
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away
- The engine hesitates or surges during acceleration and at steady speed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
