What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the mixture through the oxygen sensor and compensates for deviations with self-learning adaptations. The code is set when the mixture becomes too rich, so that the adaptations for bank 1 reach an end position, and the control module treats it as a fault when the fuel adaptation is too high towards rich.
Possible causes
- Clogged air filter
- Oil level too high
- Contaminated engine oil, with petrol from many short cold starts
- Leaking fuel injectors
- High fuel pressure
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check that the air filter is not clogged
- 3Check the oil level sits between the dipstick marks
- 4Check the intake system for blockages and loose parts, such as a loose air control in the air filter housing
- 5If several short cold starts have been made, for example while shunting, petrol may have mixed into the oil; the effect on the adaptations then goes away after some driving
- 6Have a workshop check the fuel pressure and the mass air flow sensor with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice5
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- Poor performance
- The engine misfires
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away
- The engine hesitates or surges during acceleration, deceleration and at steady speed
