What does this fault code mean?

The ECM gets mixture information from the oxygen sensor across different load ranges and corrects deviations with self-learning adaptations. The code is set when the mixture becomes too rich, so that the adaptations for bank 2 reach an end position. The fuel adaptation is then too high towards rich, and the control module treats this as a fault.

    Possible causes

    • Clogged air filter
    • Oil level too high
    • Contaminated engine oil, for example with petrol from many short journeys
    • Leaking fuel injectors
    • High fuel pressure
    • Damaged mass air flow sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
    2. 2Check that the air filter is not clogged
    3. 3Check the oil level sits between the dipstick marks
    4. 4Check the intake system for blockages and loose parts, such as a loose air control in the air filter housing
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool: see whether the fuel adaptations for bank 2 are clearly shifted towards rich across several areas
    6. 6Have a workshop check the fuel pressure and the mass air flow sensor with diagnostic equipment

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Check engine light (MIL) on
    • Poor performance
    • The engine misfires

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
