What does this fault code mean?
The control module (ECM) monitors the fuel temperature using a sensor in the fuel rail. The code is set when the value strays too far from the engine and intake air temperatures after the engine has been off for a long time, or when the signal is missing altogether. The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it may not be present when you check the car.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connectors at the sensor
- Loose connection at the fuel temperature sensor
- Oxidation in the connections to the sensor
- Faulty fuel temperature sensor
- Open circuit in the signal wire
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then run the engine and see whether it returns
- 2Check the connector at the fuel pressure sensor, which has the temperature sensor built in, for looseness, oxidation and damage
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the sensor has no break and no short to earth (the body)
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare fuel temperature in live data with the engine and intake air temperatures after a long stop
- 5If the fault returns despite these checks, have a workshop check the sensor and its signal
Symptoms you may notice1
- The Check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- The control module uses the signal from the engine temperature sensor instead
- The fuel temperature is set to a predefined value
