What does this fault code mean?
The control module (ECM) weighs the reading from the oil temperature sensor against a calculated model. The code is set when the value is unreasonably low. The control module then works out the engine oil temperature using a model instead of using the sensor value.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- Damaged sensor for oil level and oil temperature
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Read and clear the code, then start the engine to see whether it returns
- 3Check the oil temperature sensor connector, which is also a sensor for oil level, for looseness and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to earth
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the engine oil temperature with a cold engine and compare it with the outside temperature
- 6If the fault remains, a workshop should check the sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- The engine oil temperature is calculated using a model instead
