What does this fault code mean?
The control module (ECM) weighs the reading from the oil temperature sensor against a calculated model. The code is set when the value is unreasonably high. The control module then uses a model to work out the engine oil temperature instead.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Damaged sensor for oil level and oil temperature
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Read and clear the code, then start the engine to see whether it returns
- 3Check the oil temperature sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the engine oil temperature in live data with the coolant temperature when the engine is warm, and see whether they are close to each other
- 5If the fault remains, a workshop should check the sensor and the wiring
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- The engine oil temperature is calculated using a model instead
