What does this fault code mean?
The control module (ECM) sets the oil temperature sensor signal against the coolant temperature. If the two differ too much, the code is set and the signal is judged implausible. The signal is also used to work out when the next service should be shown.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Damaged oil temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Read and clear the code, then drive the car for a while to see whether it returns
- 3Check the oil temperature sensor connectors for oxidation and contact resistance
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the oil temperature with the coolant temperature in live data after the car has been parked for a long time and driven for a while
- 6If the fault remains, a workshop should check the sensor and the wiring
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
