System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsS80 (2007–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The control module (ECM) actively switches between rich and lean fuel-air mixture and checks how well the rear lambda sensor on bank 1 keeps up with the changes. The code is set when the sensor reacts too slowly during the switch from lean to rich. The fault shows up as a warning lamp and a message in the display.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged rear lambda sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Read and clear the code, then drive the car for a while on the road to see whether it returns
- 3Check the connector at the rear lambda sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the rear lambda sensor signal in live data and see whether it switches rich and lean when you lift off
- 5If the fault remains, a workshop with diagnostic equipment should check the connections and the rear lambda sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The Check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
- Message in the display together with a warning symbol
