What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has detected an open circuit in the control circuit to the injector for cylinder 8, which sits in the rear cylinder bank closest to the passenger compartment. The control signal is then too high, too low or missing, and the injector may stop working for that cylinder alone. The fault may be in the wire, the connector or the injector.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the injector connector
- Open circuit in the signal wire to the injector for cylinder 8
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Open circuit in the supply voltage wire to the injector
- Damaged injector
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and take the car for a test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the fuse if the engine will not start or every injector has a code (the fuse positions are in the owner's manual)
- 3Look at the connector to the cylinder 8 injector: loose fit, corrosion or moisture are common causes
- 4With a multimeter, check that the wire from the injector has no break and is not shorted to ground or to positive
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the injector resistance and check the control circuit with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice3
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on
- Engine not firing on all cylinders
- The engine cranks but will not fire
What the fault can affect1
- Fuel trim control is disabled, so the fuel mixture is then controlled without feedback from the oxygen sensor
