What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors engine temperature through the coolant temperature sensor and has registered coolant temperature above the permitted level. The cause may be poor contact or an open circuit in the sensor's signal wire, but also a cooling system that is not working, for example a damaged water pump, a damaged thermostat or a leaking cylinder head gasket.
Possible causes
- Poor contact with raised resistance in the sensor connector
- Open circuit in the signal wire from the coolant temperature sensor
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged water pump
- Damaged electric thermostat
- Leaking cylinder head gasket
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check the coolant level when the engine is cold and look for leaks under the car
- 3Check that the sensor connector is secure and clean, and use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no break or contact with ground
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the coolant temperature in live data while the engine runs and check that it rises and falls steadily
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the water pump, thermostat and cylinder head gasket with diagnostic equipment
- 6If the message to switch off the engine appears, stop and let the engine cool down rather than driving on
Symptoms you may notice2
- Cooling fan runs all the time
- Warning symbol and text message in the display
What the fault can affect1
- The information display may show a message to switch off the engine
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
