What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors engine speed and has registered that the engine has been run above its permitted speed. The code is general and does not specify a particular type of fault. The cause may be a missed gear change, or engine oil that has entered the intake manifold or the cylinder bores, and contaminated engine oil is also a possible cause.

    Possible causes

    • Missed gear change causing the engine to overspeed
    • Engine oil in the intake manifold or in the cylinder bores
    • Contaminated engine oil

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact. Fuse locations are shown in the owner's manual
    3. 3Think back to whether you missed a gear when the fault appeared, or whether the shift was stiff
    4. 4Check the engine oil level and condition, and look for oil in the intake hoses
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool: follow engine speed in live data at idle and check that it stays steady
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the engine with diagnostic equipment

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • High or unsteady idle
    • Warning symbol and text message in the display
    • The car feels poor to drive, with reduced performance and lack of power

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
