What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors communication with the central electronic module (CEM) on the CAN network, which carries the accelerator pedal position. The code means that messages from the CEM lack a correct sequence counter or are not being updated, that is, the counter that should change with each new message does not match. This points to a communication fault, for example in a wire or connector.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the communication wire
- Communication wire shorted to ground
- Communication wire shorted to supply voltage
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the connections
- Short circuit in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in all control modules. Several codes at once often point to a communication fault on the CAN network
- 2Check that the battery is fully charged and that the battery terminals and earth connections are clean and tight
- 3Gently shake the wiring harness and connectors with the ignition on and see whether the fault appears. A loose connection may be the cause
- 4Check that the fuses are intact. Fuse locations are shown in the owner's manual
- 5Do not replace the central electronic module (CEM) for a CAN fault unless troubleshooting has shown that it is faulty
- 6Have a workshop measure on the CAN network with diagnostic equipment and find which control module is disrupting communication
Symptoms you may notice2
- Message in the information display
- Accelerator pedal ignored when the brake is applied
What the fault can affect1
- When the brake pedal is pressed at the same time, the accelerator is treated as released
