What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has detected an electrical fault in the signal from throttle position sensor potentiometer 2 (circuit 2), where the voltage is too low. It may be caused by poor contact, a signal wire shorted to ground or broken, the supply to the potentiometers, or a damaged throttle unit.
Possible causes
- Poor contact with oxidation in the connections between the ECM and the throttle unit
- Signal wire shorted to ground or broken
- Supply to the throttle unit's two potentiometers broken or shorted to ground
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact. Fuse locations are shown in the owner's manual
- 3Look at the connectors on the throttle unit and the engine control module for loose fit, corrosion and moisture
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the supply wire to the throttle unit is not broken and not shorted to ground
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read potentiometer 2 in live data with the ignition on, first with the pedal released and then pressed, and see whether the value changes
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the potentiometer resistance with diagnostic equipment. A replacement throttle unit needs adaptation, which the workshop carries out
Symptoms you may notice2
- The car feels poor to drive, with reduced performance and lack of power
- Warning symbol and text message in the display
What the fault can affect2
- The throttle position is instead worked out from potentiometer 1
- If codes are stored for both potentiometer 1 and 2, the power to the throttle motor is switched off and the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
