What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the signals from the throttle unit's two position sensors. The fault is set when the signal from either sensor is unreasonably high. The other sensor's signal is then used, and the cruise control stays switched off while the fault is present.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
    • Signal wires shorted to voltage
    • Power supply shorted to battery voltage
    • Open circuit in the ground wire
    • Ground wire shorted to voltage
    • Damaged throttle unit

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact. Fuse locations are shown in the owner's manual
    3. 3Inspect the throttle unit connector for chafing, pinching and play
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the throttle unit are not shorted to voltage
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the two throttle position sensor values in live data at idle, and check whether either one reads unreasonably high
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the throttle unit with diagnostic equipment

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • The car feels poor to drive, with reduced performance and lack of power
    • Cruise control will not engage
    • Cruise control does not work at all

    What the fault can affect2

    • The other sensor's signal is used instead
    • Cruise control stays switched off while the fault is present

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
