Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), V70 (2008–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The fault concerns the position sensor circuit for the bypass valve, where the signal is too high. It is set by a fault on the PWM signal linking the ECM and the valve, or by excessive temperature in the valve's end stage.
Possible causes
- Loose contact, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Open circuit in the supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged bypass valve
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read the bypass valve position value in live data with the ignition on, and see whether it reads high even when at rest
- 3Look at the bypass valve connector for play, oxidation and loose connections
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the bypass valve has no contact with positive
- 5Check that the fuses are intact. Fuse locations are shown in the owner's manual
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the bypass valve with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
