What does this fault code mean?
The fault is intermittent, meaning it is sporadic and has occurred at some point without necessarily being present now. Although the code is named as a signal fault, it applies to the ground lead of the high-pressure fuel pump. The ECM grounds that lead to activate the pump and stores the code if the lead has been short-circuited to ground.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Loose connection
- Ground lead short-circuited to ground
- Damaged fuel pump
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault code, clear it and test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Tighten and inspect the ground connections to the fuel pump, looking for loose contacts and oxidation
- 4Gently move the connectors and harness at the pump while the engine runs to see whether the fault follows the movement
- 5With the ignition off and the connector disconnected, use a multimeter to check that the ground lead has no contact with the body
- 6Have a workshop check the fuel pump and its control
Symptoms you may notice3
- The Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- Uneven idle
- The car hesitates, surges or runs jerkily, at any time or all the time
