What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the function of the EGR valve and the signal from its position sensor. Although the code is named as an intake air flow position sensor, the sensor concerned is the EGR valve position sensor. If the signal is periodically faulty or implausible, the fault code is stored, so the signal comes and goes. The code is general and does not specify the type of fault.
Possible causes
- Loose connection
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged EGR valve
- Damaged throttle valve
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Check the connectors and wiring to the EGR valve for play; with the engine running, gently move the connectors and see whether the fault code changes
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the EGR valve position in live data with the engine running and see whether the value jumps irregularly
- 5If the fault remains: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the EGR valve and the throttle valve
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine warning light ("Check engine") lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- No exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control
- Soot particles are not burned off as they should be
