What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) detects misfires by measuring speed deviations in the flywheel rotation. If several cylinders misfire often enough over a given number of crankshaft turns, the fault code is set because such misfires can affect emissions or damage the catalyst. The code itself does not say which cylinder is affected; it is often stored together with a cylinder-specific misfire code.
Possible causes
- Low fuel level
- Contaminated or incorrect fuel
- Air leak in the intake system
- Clogged or leaking injection valve
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Uneven compression or damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; if there are codes for camshaft control or the camshaft control valve, these should be traced first
- 2Check that the fuel level is sufficient and that fuel suited to the season has been filled
- 3Check the hoses and connections in the intake system for cracks and loose clamps
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counters per cylinder and see which one stands out (cylinders are counted from the end away from the flywheel)
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the fuel pressure, the compression and the injection valves, and update the engine control module software if a newer version is available
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning light lights up or flashes
- The engine misfires, hesitates or runs roughly, especially under acceleration
- Uneven idle and difficult starting
- Reduced performance and lack of power
- A message appears in the text display
What the fault can affect2
- Lambda control is switched off
- Control of the catalytic converter rear oxygen sensor is switched off
