What does this fault code mean?
The fault code is stored when the engine control module (ECM) detects misfires on several cylinders that can damage the catalytic converter. Unburned fuel that reaches the exhaust system can cause the catalytic converter to overheat. The code is part of a misfire series and does not replace the cylinder code that shows which cylinder is affected.
Possible causes
- Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Clogged crankcase ventilation
- Damaged VVT unit
- Uneven compression
- Incorrectly calculated ethanol content
- Low fuel level
What you can do
- 1This code has no fault tracing of its own; read the cylinder-specific codes to see which cylinders misfire
- 2Check that the fuel level is sufficient and that the fuel suits the season
- 3Check the crankcase ventilation hoses and valve for clogging
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counters for each cylinder in live data with the engine running and see whether any of them stands out
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the VVT unit, the compression and the fuel pressure
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
- Uneven idle
- The engine feels short of power
- The engine jerks or hesitates when driven
- The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect3
- The catalytic converter diagnosis is switched off
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Lambda control is switched off
