What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) registers misfires by measuring speed deviations in the flywheel. If cylinder 1 misfires too often, the fault code is stored. The code states which cylinder is affected. The cause may lie in the fuel, the air intake, the compression or the injection. The code is general and does not specify the type of fault.
Possible causes
- Low fuel level
- Repeated cold starts where the engine does not warm up between them
- Contaminated or incorrect fuel
- Air leak
- Clogged or leaking injection valve
- Uneven compression or damaged injection valves
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; codes for camshaft control or the camshaft control valve are traced first
- 2Check that the fuel level is sufficient and that the correct fuel has been filled; also make sure the engine oil is at the right level
- 3Check the ignition coil and injection valve on cylinder 1 for damage and oxidised connectors
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 1 with the engine running and compare it with the other cylinders
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the compression, the fuel pressure and the crankcase ventilation, and update the software if a newer version is available
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning light lights up or flashes
- The engine misfires and does not run on all cylinders
- The engine is hard to start
- Uneven idle and reduced performance
- A message appears in the text display
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Lambda control is switched off
