What does this fault code mean?

The fault code is stored when the engine control module (ECM) detects misfires on cylinder 1 that can damage the catalytic converter, during a period after the engine starts. The misfire can make the catalytic converter overheat, and the code shows which cylinder is affected.

    Possible causes

    • Low fuel level
    • Contaminated or incorrect fuel
    • Air leak
    • Clogged or leaking injection valve
    • Incorrect fuel pressure
    • Damaged VVT unit

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault codes; any camshaft control codes are traced first
    2. 2Check the intake system and the crankcase ventilation for leaks and clogging
    3. 3Check that the fuel level and fuel quality are correct, and that the engine oil level is right
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the ethanol content calculated by the control module in live data and see whether it matches the fuel that has been filled
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the fuel pressure, the compression and the VVT unit, and adjust the ethanol content if needed

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The engine is hard to start and cranks slowly
    • The engine feels short of power
    • The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly when driven
    • Uneven idle
    • The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally

    What the fault can affect2

    • Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
    • Lambda control is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
