What does this fault code mean?
The fault code indicates that cylinder 2 is misfiring. It is stored when the engine control module (ECM) measures more misfires than allowed on the cylinder, using speed deviations in the flywheel as the basis. The misfires may be emission-related or harmful to the catalytic converter. The code is general and does not specify the type of fault.
Possible causes
- Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Damaged injection valves
- Clogged crankcase ventilation
- Uneven compression
- Dirty or damaged valve lifter
- Fault in the EGR system
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes and trace any camshaft codes first
- 2Check that the fuel level is sufficient and that the fuel is the right type for the season
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 2 in live data with the engine running and compare it with the other cylinders
- 4Check the connectors to the ignition coil and injection valve on cylinder 2 for damage and oxidation
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the valve lifters and the compression, and update the software if a newer version is available
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning light lights up or flashes
- The engine does not fire on every cylinder
- A message appears in the text display
- The engine is hard to start
- Reduced performance and uneven idle
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Lambda control is switched off
