What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) registers misfires on cylinder 3 that can damage the catalytic converter, and the code is stored after the engine starts. The misfire can make the catalytic converter too hot, and the code shows that cylinder 3 is the one misfiring.

    Possible causes

    • Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
    • Clogged crankcase ventilation
    • Uneven compression
    • Incorrectly calculated ethanol content
    • Damaged VVT unit
    • Clogged or leaking injection valve

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault codes and trace camshaft-related codes first
    2. 2Check that the fuel is the right type for the season and that the fuel level is sufficient
    3. 3Check that the crankcase ventilation is not clogged and that the intake system does not leak
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 3 in live data with the engine running and see whether it stands out
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valve and the VVT unit on cylinder 3, and the compression if needed

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The engine starts with difficulty
    • Uneven idle
    • The engine feels weak and lacks power
    • The engine jerks or hesitates when driven
    • The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally

    What the fault can affect2

    • Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
    • Lambda control is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
